The main research fields are infrared and submillimeter molecular Spectroscopy, laser spectroscopy, as well as development of instrumentation for mm- and submm-radio astronomy, in particular of acousto-optical spectrometers (AOS), development of the mid-IR heterodyne receiver THIS and observations of wind and temperature in planetry atmospheres. 

Involved in the development of instrumentation for the 3m KOSMA observatory on Gornergrat near Zermatt/Switzerland and for the SOFIA airborne observatory. Development of instrumentation for the NASA SMEX mission "SWAS" and the ESA cornerstone mission "Herschel".

  • Co-I for the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS),
  • Co-I for the "HIFI" instrument on the Far Infrared Space Telescope (Herschel), responsible for the development of the Wide Band Spectrometer (WBS) for HIFI,
  • Co-I for the German development of THz heterodyne instrumentation for SOFIA,
  • PI for the Cologne tuneable mid-IR heterodyne instrument THIS, a possible second generation instrument on SOFIA.
  • Deputy spokesperson for the SFB 494 and 301
