Filaments

Star forming filaments are the building blocks of molecular clouds. Their properties and importance are currently in the center of an active and ongoing debate in the star formation community.

By means of high-resolution MHD simulations we investigate the formation of such filaments, the fragmentation properties - whether fragmentation occurs in a uniform fashion as predicted by the Jeans length or is rather set by turbulent motions - and the associated star formation process.

An active point of research is how the sub-structure of filaments, so-called fibres, can be identified in observations and matched to actual physical objects in space.
