Research Activities in the Laboratory Astrophysics Group
In the Molecular Astrophysics Group we investigate the quantum world of molecules. We specialize in recording fingerprint spectra ranging from the microwave to the infrared regime and we study molecular collisions which tell us how molecules are formed or destroyed. This knowledge allows astrophysicists to unambiguously say which molecules are present in space and by which amount based on their observations.
We develop special techniques to hunt for new molecules in the laboratory and in space and our CDMS database is the largest repository of molecular spectra in the Millimeter and Sub-mm range.
Our scientific motivation, the instruments, experimental techniques and typical results are briefly explained in a small brochure.
